1879 Industry
The Folding Carton

In 1890, almost entirely by accident, a printer by the name of Robert Gair invented the concept of the folding carton after a metal rule used for creasing bags shifted its position and cut the bag. Gair decided that by cutting and creasing cartons in one operation he could make prefabricated cartons. Gair went on to found a packaging empire that still bears his name.

 

1890 Industry
BPIF Founded

British Print Industry Federation founded.

 

1896 Industry
National Biscuit Company (NABISCO) is the first to utilise folding cartons.

Seeking a better way to package their crackers, Nabisco came across Gair’s folding cartons as a worthy alternative. The initial production order was for 2 million units. Credited as the birth of the folding carton.

 

1906 Industry
Kellogg’s Uses Cartons

The Kellogg Company was first to use cardboard cereal cartons.
